The National Center for the Safe Transportation of Children with Special Health Care Needs
The National Center for the Safe Transportation of Children with Special Health Care Needs serves as a resource for caregivers, families, health care professionals, transportation providers, and child passenger safety advocates. The National Center is based at the Automotive Safety Program has long been considered a leader in the field of transporting children with special health care needs. Located at the Indiana University School of Medicine, adjacent to Riley Children's Health, the National Center was established in 2004 to address the unique challenges associated with transporting children with disabilities.
The National Center provides the following resources:
- An occupational therapist trained in a broad range of health conditions/medical diagnoses and potential adaptive child restraints..
- Phone line (1-800-KID-N-CAR) staffed by additional child passenger safety technicians (CPSTs) experienced in resolving issues associated with the transportation of children with special health care needs.
- Resources regarding frequency asked questions, medical conditions and potential car seats and child passenger restraint systems.
- A two-day training, Safe Travel for All Children: Transporting Children with Special Health Care Needs, for CPSTs interested in assisting children with disabilities.
- Contact information for Safe Travel for All Children Instructors located throughout the country.
- Presentations and workshops.
- National Center brochure with current adaptive restraints available.
- Educational materials and diagnosis specific brochures.
