Medical Research

Exciting medical research is underway at IU School of Medicine—Indianapolis. Faculty at this campus collaboratively conduct research in many different areas of medicine, including neuroscience, cancer, pediatrics and musculoskeletal disorders. The Indianapolis campus hosts hundreds of advanced research laboratories and research centers that cover bench, translational and clinical outcomes research. Students at IU School of Medicine-Indianapolis have opportunities to work with basic science and clinical faculty on research throughout the academic year.

Health Policy Research

In addition to laboratory-based bench research, the Indianapolis campus hosts a collection of research centers that focus on health care policy and patient outcomes. Research underway at the Center for Health Policy and Professionalism Research focuses on the organization and financing of health care and finding new ways to assess and improve the effectiveness of health services and their impact on patient outcomes. Other centers focused on health delivery include the Bowen Center for Health Workforce Research and Policy and the Center for Global Health and more.

Student Research Programs

IU School of Medicine students can enrich their studies and training by participating in a variety of research opportunities on the Indianapolis campus and throughout the community. The student research programs hosted at the Indianapolis campus are available to all IU School of Medicine students statewide. Research programs are also available to individuals not currently enrolled as a student of IU School of Medicine.

Research Facilities

The Indianapolis campus of IU School of Medicine is home to hundreds of research labs, centers and institutes filled with scientists who are advancing medical research in critical areas of medicine. Research faculty at this campus work collaboratively to make discoveries in basic science, translate those discoveries into potential new therapies, and test those therapies in clinical trials.

Associate Dean of Alzheimer's Disease Research

Liana Apostolova’s research focuses on the early symptomatic and presymptomatic stages of Alzheimer’s disease and on the development and validation of sensitive imaging and genetic biomarkers for Alzheimer’s disease and other dementing disorders.

Advancing Medicine with Collaboration

Modern biomedical research increasingly demands the participation of scientists with varying specialties to lend their expertise to research projects. IU School Medicine—Indianapolis encourages both ad-hoc collaborations among investigators (supported by such tools as Research Connect) and centers and institutes that reach across departments and schools. For example, the Indiana Alzheimer Disease Center includes members from the departments of neurology, psychiatry, radiological sciences, biotstatistics and more, including the Regenstrief Institute. The Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health draws on the skills of scientists from the IU School of Medicine as well as the schools of Engineering and Technology, Science, Dentistry, and Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at IUPUI.

The focus of research at IU School of Medicine is centered on the hundreds of scientists located at the Indianapolis campus, yet this is a statewide school conducting advanced medical research throughout Indiana. To stay up-to-date on research developments, IU School of Medicine offers a variety of information sources, including the newsroom and a research blog. Those interested in hearing faculty researchers describe their work in person can attend seminars as well as the annual meeting of the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute, featuring presentations and poster sessions from scientists across the state.
